Bassoonists United

I love networking.  After the Symphony performance on Saturday night, we hung around backstage (my friends performed the pre-show), and we got to meet the Principal and Associate Principal bassoonists of the Detroit Symphony.  When Bob Williams (Principal) came up from the locker room, almost immediately after meeting us, he asked, like a little kid, "Do you want to see my bassoon?!"  Well, sure.  So he showed us his Fox 601 with gold-plated keys and all of its ridiculous add-ons, and proceeded to do the same for his reeds.  He told us all about his cane processing machine that can crank out a piece of dry, gouged, shaped, and profiled cane in about five minutes.  He had already offered to let us come over and use it when he came to our studio recital last term.

Yesterday, I saw that Laura Najarian (Second Bassoonist for the Atlanta Symphony) was friends with one of my friends on Facebook, so I added her, hoping that she would remember me from the youth symphony for the last couple of years.  Not only did she remember me, but she also sent me a message saying that she didn't know I ended up at U of M, asking if I am studying with Jeff Lyman and that I should accept ANY invitation to eat his cooking, and giving me props for the double major because she certainly couldn't do more than the performance degree.  I replied with a typically too-long response, but I'm glad she knows who I am.

Yesterday morning, two of my music friends and I visited Huron Hills (Baptist) Church, where most people in IV attend.  They had an interesting artistic video at the beginning about worship and how it's not for us, it's for God, and we should therefore not let the "worship style" ruin our day.  The service was all right, but the contemporary music was a little redundant, there was no printed Order of Worship, and the sermon felt a little too much like Oprah for my taste.  But it was fun seeing everyone I knew.

Last night, we had another bassoon party at Tim's apartment!  Disney movie of choice: The Land Before Time!  Christian and I came over early for dinner, and Tim made fettucini alfredo.  (I didn't mention it to him, but he didn't put butter in the boiling water with the noodles, so they all stuck together.  And there was a less-than-desirable sauce-to-pasta ratio, but it was still delicious.)  We spent the rest of the evening playing Wii Mario Cart, euchre (I watched), BananaGrams (this surprisingly entertaining game where each person has their own Scrabble board and you use verbal commands like "Split!" "Peel!" and "Dump!"), and Boggle.  We're cute, I know.

I slept in late today, and I absolutely must do laundry, practice, and hopefully get in some homework.  Thank God for national holidays.

Go Blue!!

  1. I'm glad you enjoyed the concert and of course that lady would remember you! You're a very difficult individual to forget Miss Elmo. Yeah, contemporary music isn't usually the greatest, but it sounds like you had a good time getting to see all the IV people. Land Before Time is incredible of course, and I feel as though you're hinting to Tim about the butter and sauce, haha, but in any case, sounds delicious! Enjoy your laundry and homework! Love you!!

  2. Well, I'm feeling quite relieved! Sounds like you had a jam-packed and fun weekend, and I knew you had a busy week ahead, but I didn't know you got the holiday! Makes all the difference in the world!!

Hum-m-m-m-m, sounds like they're trying to excuse their worship style that doesn't appeal to a lot of people, or they wouldn't have had to make the comment they did about worship!
